Churn Rate

Churn rate measures the percentage of customers (or revenue) a business loses over a specific period. It's the inverse of retention — and the silent killer of SaaS companies.

Formulas

Customer churn rate:

Customer Churn = (Customers lost in period / Customers at start of period) × 100

Revenue churn rate (more useful):

Revenue Churn = (MRR lost in period / MRR at start of period) × 100

Benchmarks

SegmentGood Monthly ChurnGreat Monthly Churn
SMB SaaS< 5%< 3%
Mid-market SaaS< 2%< 1%
Enterprise SaaS< 1%< 0.5%

Annual churn context: 5% monthly churn = 46% annual churn. That means nearly half your customers leave each year. Even "small" monthly churn compounds painfully.

Types of Churn

  • Voluntary churn — Customer actively cancels (dissatisfied, switched competitor, budget cuts)
  • Involuntary churn — Payment failure, expired credit card, billing issues
  • Logo churn — Count of customers lost (regardless of revenue)
  • Revenue churn — Dollar value of MRR lost
  • Net revenue churn — Revenue lost minus expansion revenue (can be negative — that's good!)

Why Net Negative Churn Is the Goal

Net negative churn means your existing customers grow their spending faster than others leave. If you lose $5K in churned MRR but gain $7K in expansion MRR, your net revenue churn is -2%. Your revenue grows even if you acquire zero new customers.

Churn in AI-Run Companies

AI-run companies have a unique churn dynamic:

Advantages:

  • AI customer support responds instantly 24/7 — fewer frustrated customers leaving due to poor support
  • AI continuously improves the product — features ship faster, keeping customers engaged
  • AI monitors usage patterns and can proactively intervene when a customer is at risk

Risks:

  • No human relationship-building — enterprise customers may feel disconnected
  • AI-generated communications can feel impersonal if not calibrated well

What investors should check: On EvolC, look for AI-run companies with net negative revenue churn — it's the strongest signal that the product is valuable and the AI operations are working.
